Frequently Asked Questions About Improv Classes
When does the class begin?
The class has no fixed start date, as it
is an ongoing workshop, not a one-time course. You may begin at
any time, and you will get all the exercises over approximately
eight weeks. You may repeat the cycle, as you will get more out
of the exercises teach time around.
How many classes do I have
to take? Do I have to pay for a set number of classes?
Take as many classes as you like. You pay
for one class at a time.
Do I need any prior experience
or training?
No, it is an introductory level class.
But what if I'm not funny?
It's an acting class, not an improvisational
comedy class. Being funny involves a whole separate set of obligations
which you need not worry about in the basic level. Scenes may
be funny, dramatic, or a combination of the two. If you master
basic improv skills and you want to audition for Laughing Gas,
we will then offer you advanced training concentrating on improv
comedy during our rehearsals.
Will this class prepare
me for a career in stand-up comedy?
Not directly. Though there is a nationally
known chain of comedy clubs known as "The Improv," stand-up
comedy is a different art form based on prepared monologues with
very little improvisational content. However, an ability to think
on your feet will be helpful if you wish to pursue it.
But I'm not an entertainer.
Can improv help me in everyday life?
Sure! Improv teaches you to think on your
feet, particularly if you have to deal with the public. Teachers,
sales people, lawyers and executives can all benefit from improvisational
training. Improv will give you new insight into relationships
and personal strategies.
I'm interested in professional
acting. Do you offer any other acting classes?
Laughing Gas director and staff instructor
Gerald
Owens offers classes in improvisation,
scene study and monologues at the John
Robert Powers School in West Palm
Beach, but at present his Miami classes are limited to improvisation
workshops. He is available as a private acting coach for actors
who wish to prepare audition material. Click here
to inquire about private coaching.
However, a wide range of classes are available
elsewhere in South Florida. Casting Director Linda Zerne's website,
The Actor's
Info Booth, includes valuable information
for both novice and experienced actors, as well as a wide range
of classes featuring teachers from Florida and guest instructors
from Los Angeles or New York. Subscribe
to her e-mail newsletter for information
on upcoming classes as well as castings for plays and independent
films.
The
Acting School of South Florida in
Hollywood, Florida, also offers a selection of classes in scene
study, audition technique, acting for the camera and more.
