Leukemia and Lymphoma Society benefits from Improv show May
19
The Laughing Gas Comedy Improv Theatre Company, in conjunction
with the Main Street Playhouse, presents a benefit performance
for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at 8 pm, Thursday, May 19,
at the theater at 6766 Main Street in Miami Lakes.
There
is a $10 minimum donation for the 90-minute show of improvised
comedy, with the proceeds going directly to the Leukemia and Lymphoma
Society's Team in Training program.
Natacha Garcia and Lisette Gutierrez are part of a team raising
funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society while preparing to
participate in a marathon in Anchorage in June, and Laughing Gas
is pitching in to help.
"In only the U.S., nearly 300 people a day learn they have
leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma," said Garcia. "Leukemia
research is considered the 'window' to treatment and cure for
all cancers, so this is an organization that can really make a
difference."
Gutierrez
noted that leukemia is the leading cause of death in children
between the ages of 1 and 5.
"I am proud to be fund raising to find a cure so that parents
of children with leukemia will be able to help their kids long
and normal lives," she said.
Jacki Morris, campaign coordinator for the Leukemia and Lymphoma
Society, said that since the Team in Training program was launched
in 1986, it has raised more than half a billion dollars and trained
more than 200,000 athletes. Each athlete raises a minimum of $4,500,
with 25 percent going to offset expenses and 75 percent going
directly to help find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma Hodgkins disease
and myeloma, and to help improve the quality of life for patients
and families.
The
collaboration is part of Laughing Gas' "Improv-ing the Community"
effort. Over the past several months, the troupe has performed
to help get out the vote and to raise funds for charitable organizations.
"We're proud to be doing what we can to help this worthy
cause," said Gerald Owens, Laughing Gas director. "It's
nice when we can help while also making people laugh."
